How to charge on an accelerated charging station?

Learn how to charge at a public accelerated charging station, choose the right cable, start a session and control charging costs with Electus.

How to charge on an accelerated charging station?

A fast public charging station lets you charge an electric vehicle during a stay of several hours.

You’ll typically find these stations:

  • In city centers
  • In public parking lots
  • In shopping centers
  • Near hotels
  • In some company parking lots
  • Near restaurants and public facilities

They’re particularly well suited to passive charging: your car charges while you work, shop, have lunch, or visit a nearby place.

What power does a fast charging station deliver?

Fast charging stations generally deliver a power output between 7 and 22 kW in alternating current (AC).

The power actually received, however, depends on your vehicle’s onboard charger.

For example:

  • A car limited to 7.4 kW won’t charge at 22 kW
  • Some single-phase vehicles may be limited when plugged into a three-phase station

The power displayed on the station therefore corresponds to its maximum capacity, not necessarily the power actually received by your vehicle.

Which cable should you use?

On most fast public charging stations, the cable isn’t attached. You’ll need to use your own Type 2 to Type 2 cable.

It’s recommended to keep this cable in your trunk so you can use public charging stations during your trips.

Some stations do come with an attached cable. This setup, however, is more common on rapid charging stations.

If you don’t have a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, you can get one here:

How do you find a fast charging station?

You can locate a fast charging station using the Electus app:

You’ll be able to check the following information about each station:

  • Its power output
  • The number of connectors
  • Its availability
  • Its pricing
  • Any access restrictions
  • Available photos and information

How do you start charging?

Before you can start a charging session at a fast charging station, order your Electus badge in advance:

  1. When you arrive at the station, take your Electus badge and tap it on the station’s reader.
  2. The station may first ask you to select which connector to use.
  3. Plug the cable into the station, then into your vehicle.

If the station has a cover, close it so the charging session can start.

How do you stop charging?

To stop charging, take your Electus badge and tap it on the station’s reader.

If the station has a cover, it should unlock automatically.

Unplug the cable from the station side first, then from the vehicle side. Store your cable and close the station’s cover.

What does charging cost?

Charging costs can vary from one station to another. The rates to refer to are the ones shown in the Electus app.

Fast charging stations often apply pricing that includes an extra fee if the vehicle is left without charging, or once a certain plug-in time is exceeded.

Pay close attention to avoid any surprises: the Electus app includes a cost calculator to help you estimate your charging fees.
